It typically takes 4 hours to mow or roll greens and change pins, move tee markers and fill divots during a normal day. During shotgun days we typically send out twice the labor force to accomplish these tasks, so two hours is what it would take to get the course ready for play.
During exceptionally cold days, the frost stays much longer than normal and if we are not able to start working by 9AM we will not be able to finish our work prior to 11 AM.
When this happens we have two choices: delay the shotgun to allow us to complete our course prep, or allow play and have the staff finish their work among the golfers.
Neither of these choices are perfect there will be give and take, if we hold the golfers back sufficiently to allow our work it may be an hour or more, most likely not the best scenario. This is why occasionally you may be inconvenienced by a Turfcare worker completing a task. We ask you to be patient and allow them a few moments to complete their task and get out of your way.
If you are delayed, take a moment to enjoy the scenery, chat with your group or fill a few divots. Ultimately, waiting for a staff member to finish a task is not much different than waiting for the group in front of you to finish playing a hole.
What you give is a few moments of your time, what you get in return is a better conditioned golf course and the knowledge that you will ultimately finish sooner because you got to play earlier to begin with.
Great blog, Tim! It's nice to be able to be informed this way.
